Perhaps you’ve always wanted to travel to Spain to see a bullfight, or to Australia to view kangaroos. Or maybe, you’d prefer a colder clime, such as is found in Norway, Russia, or Sweden. No matter your chosen location, Madame Alexander is your ideal port-au-call, for a kaleidoscope of travel options. The new line of international dolls for 2003 will visit all these destinations, and more.
The brunette, 8” doll for Spain, will arrive dressed in a red silk matador outfit. In her hand is a red cape that she uses to attract the stuffed bull that comes with her. From Spain, your itinerary will take you to either Portugal or Greece.
If you choose Portugal your 8” Wendy will come dressed in traditional folk garb, a striped cotton skirt with a black and white, flowered bottom, which is covered with a red print apron, and covered with a red shawl. Best of all she is accessorized with a traditional folk art rooster.
Tradition is also important in Greece, where when they celebrate, the ladies wear an outfit called an Amaalia. As with the other ladies the 8” Wendy with long, dark curls, wears a long blue satin skirt that is topped with a lace trimmed red velvet jacket and hat, both of which have gold embroidery. For protection, she wears an evil eye around her neck, and carries a Bouzka, the national folk, musical instrument.
Your last stop in that part of the world will be in Italy, for a night at the carnival in Venice. Be sure to bring a costume for everyone, including Wendy is wearing one. Her gold and red extravaganza is completed by a gold mask.
For a change of pace visit Norway, where you’re blonde Wendy will come to you in an embroidered grey skirt and red knitted sweater. She comes with a friend, a little troll she plucked from under a bridge. There are no trolls in Sweden, but there are many horses, for the horse is one of their national symbols. The 8’ blonde doll comes with a horse as her accessory, a red one that has been painted with the rose-malling technique. The apron which covers the navy skirt, white blouse and red vest, has also been covered with the same symbols as the horse.
If you can, have your tour guide take you to Russia, but not by horse, for it would be too far and you wouldn’t want to be too tired to attend the Kirov ballet, and see the Madame Alexander “prima” ballerina. The red headed, brown eyed beauty is dressed in a pink and gold speckled tutu, and a body suit of pink brocade. Her pink “toe” shoes and hair are decorated with pearls. She carries her curtain call bouquet in her arms.
If you feel really adventurous after Russia, perhaps the 8’ doll from Australia or Peru will catch your eye. Australia, dressed in a sweater and kangaroo skirt, will bring her very own kangaroo and baby, called a Joey, to your house. A llama comes with Peru, a dark eyed Wendy who has black braid and wears a tradition Peruvian outfit complete with skirt, blouse, hat and shawl.
Your tour of the world is nearly over, but there is one more country you really must see, America, and that symbol of freedom, Betsy Ross. Betsy, an 8’ classic, faced Wendy, wears an outfit of red, blue and ivory which is prettily reminiscent of colonial times. She comes with a small version of the flag, she originally made.
Now that your world travels have been completed, you’ll need a rest. Time to sat back, relax, and catch up with two returning dolls, the lovelies from the Ukraine and Shanghai.
