The Alexander Doll Company (ADC) was founded 80 years ago by “Madame” Beatrice Alexander Behrman, the daughter of Russian immigrants. She was raised over her father’s doll hospital – the first in America – and often played with the dolls waiting to be mended. Her love of dolls led this dynamic woman to create her own line of exquisitely detailed dolls.
Madame Alexander infused a sense of excitement and wonderment in her fine quality, handcrafted dolls. She initiated a series of firsts in the toy industry: the first doll based on a licensed character (Scarlett™ from Gone with the Wind™), which led to the creation of dolls based on characters from popular motion pictures; the first to bring feature baby dolls to market; the first to create dolls in honor of living people (Queen Elizabeth, the Dionne Quints). Madame Alexander also introduced the first full-figured fashion doll (Cissy™) with haute couture outfits. Today, Madame Alexander’s legacy of fine craftsmanship, high quality, superior designs, continues with the debut of the ‘Alex’ doll line, chic and sophisticated 16-inch fashion dolls, great new sculpts, and popular new licensed properties like Eloise™ and Olivia™, that demonstrate that the Company remains as innovative and relevant as ever.
The Alexander Doll Company was acquired in 1995 by Kaizen Breakthrough Partnership, a private capital fund managed by Gefinor Acquisition Group, and sponsored by Gefinor, an international banking group.
The Alexander Doll Company, a New York-based company, is now celebrating its 79th Anniversary, continuing the tradition, elegance and innovation of Madame Alexander® dolls with a full line of fine quality, handcrafted collectible dolls, baby dolls and play dolls. The company has created a series of "firsts" that have shaped the doll industry and has always been a pioneer of style and quality in this community. The Alexander Doll Company is the only remaining major manufacturer of handcrafted dolls in America.
