Madame Alexander fans know that part of the doll company’s genius lies in the fact that throughout their nearly 80-year history, relatively few face sculpts have been used to create a vast universe of characters, conferring unique personalities on each doll through inventive costuming and individualized, hand-painted faces. At Madame Alexander, face molds are identified by the name of the doll on which it first appeared, and through the years, one, the “Wendy” face has proved to be enormously popular and versatile. Named after Madame Alexander’s granddaughter, the “Wendy” face was introduced in 1953 and continued substantially unchanged for quite some time. However, over the years the “Wendy” face gradually became slightly refined and altered. Now, to celebrate such an auspicious milestone, Madame Alexander is pleased to introduce Happy 50th Birthday Wendy, a beautiful 8-inch Wendy with a new facial sculpt with subtle changes that bring her much closer to her original, endearing face. Collectors old and new will delight in this charming special edition doll, a timeless figure that brings new luster to a cherished classic.
Madame Alexander devotees can always spot the unique and appealing Wendy - her sweet and slightly solemn face, wide, expressive eyes, pinchably chubby cheeks, and lovely little cupid’s bow mouth. But perhaps most notably, Wendy is perfect because of her imperfections, so Madame Alexander has made a few changes that, while significant overall, are almost imperceptible to the casual observer. Just like the first Wendy, Happy 50th Birthday Wendy’s skin color in the Caucasian version more closely approximates the creamy tone of the original, the eye area is more subtly defined and her little upturned nose is not quite symmetrical. But one thing that remains completely unchanged is that Wendy is still made with all the care and attention to detail associated with Madame Alexander. Appropriately enough, Happy 50th Birthday Wendy is dressed for a celebration in a party dress of pale blue silk dupioni. The dress has a wide Venice lace collar and is trimmed with more of the same on the edge of the short puffed sleeves. The bodice has a dropped waist bound with a pink satin sash and a short full skirt encircled by a trail of pink rose embroidery above the picot-trimmed hem. Underneath she wears a white eyelet petticoat, white tights and pink velvet maryjanes. Wendy’s mop of golden ringlets is swept to one side and secured with a small pink satin bow. A very exclusive limited edition, only 250 pieces will be made. Happy 50th Birthday Wendy even comes with her own special party favor – an adorable set of miniature paper dolls.
