RINGS IN THE CHINESE NEW YEAR WITH A COCKTAIL PARTY AT SHANGHAI TANG TO CELEBRATE THE LAUNCH OF NEW ASIAN DOLL, ARCHITECT 'JADE LEE' A 16-INCH ADDITION TO THE POPULAR "ALEX" DOLL LINE
2002-02-11

New York, NY - February 11, 2002 - Though technically Chinese New Year 2002 is the Year of the Horse, for revelers at Manhattan's unique and beautiful store, Shanghai Tang it will be the Year of Jade. Timed to take place at the conjunction of Toy Fair and Fashion Week on Monday, February 11th at 6:30PM, Madame Alexander® will launch their new Asian fashion doll 'Jade Lee' with cocktails, dim sum, and good fortune to all attendees. Madame Alexander, known for creating dolls of unsurpassed quality for the last 80 years, is pleased to host an evening devoted to launching a doll which perfectly exemplifies the Company's tradition of innovation and style. The evening will also be a notable one for doll collectors as six special, one-of-a-kind "Shanghai Tang Jade Lee" dolls will be on display and on sale for a limited time only. Crafted by Madame Alexander, the dolls wear clothing created from Shanghai Tang's updated classic Chinese designs adapted from their own Imperial Tailors, in the rich fabrics for which they are renowned.

'Jade Lee,' the latest addition to the wildly popular 'Alex' doll line, is a professional working woman, an award-winning architect who is guided by the fundamental precepts of feng shui, with its emphasis on environmental balance and harmony of form and materials. In their wardrobe designs for Jade, the Alexander Design Team adopts the same approach, translating it into clothing with clean lines and modern silhouettes, in fabrics and colors that recall the flavors of the Far East. Cutting-edge design and quality of craftsmanship employed in the creation of this line is illustrated in the use of luxurious fabrics like silk, suede, cashmere and pashmina and in design details like real working zippers, embossed and plated in 24 karat gold. After more than a year of detailed and artful sculpting, the Madame Alexander Design Team succeeded in creating the perfect new face sculpt for Jade, one that is a perfect blend of her American and Asian heritage and betrays strength of character, intelligence and beauty in its subtle, fine planes and delicate features.

The six very exclusive "Shanghai Tang Jade Lee" dolls have been handmade for the occasion. Each face has been hand-painted and each doll will come with a certificate of authenticity. The "Shanghai Tang Jade Lee" dolls will wear classic cheong sam dresses in black velvet, each lined with silk in a different vibrant shade associated with the store - fuchsia, turquoise, purple, lime green, yellow and red. The dresses have traditional Mandarin collars and asymmetrical bodices fastened with frog closures in colors that match the silk lining. Accessories include strappy high-heeled sandals featuring the same frog closures, coordinating beaded wrap bracelets and dangle earrings. Jade's hair is worn in an elaborate and dramatic double-braided updo anchored with a small gold butterfly.

Known for reviving "Chinese haute couture" with their vibrant fusion of traditional Chinese culture with the dynamism of the 21st Century, Shanghai Tang was the "perfect marriage" of time and place, form and function for Madame Alexander. And one need not consult a fortune cookie to foretell the future of the six "Shanghai Tang Jade Lee" dolls created to commemorate the launch. Due to the proven collectibility of Madame Alexander dolls and the upscale appeal of Shanghai Tang design, and the extremely limited number being produced, the dolls should be hotly in demand, and the 'Year of Jade' may just begin with fireworks well north of Chinatown!

The Alexander Doll Company, a New York-based company, is now celebrating its 79th Anniversary, continuing the tradition, elegance and innovation of Madame Alexander® dolls with a full line of fine quality, handcrafted collectible dolls, baby dolls and play dolls. The company has created a series of "firsts" that have shaped the doll industry and has always been a pioneer of style and quality in this community. The Alexander Doll Company is the only remaining major manufacturer of handcrafted dolls in America.

"May the Star of Happiness, the Star of Wealth and the Star of Longevity shine on you"
